ABOUT US

The Border Organization (TBO) identifies and trains community leaders through local institutions to address the unique challenges faced by border communities.

Non-Partisan Political Power

TBI understands that political power comes in two forms: organized money and organized people. When fellow citizens and neighbors come together to discuss the issues they and their families face on a daily basis, they can proceed to form coalitions with the power to address those issues.

The Iron Rule

Never do for others what they can do for themselves. TBO is not an advocacy group. TBO organizers teach people to work with their neighbors to collectively address the issues facing their communities.

Truly a Border Initiative

TBO currently organizes in Del Río/Val Verde County; Brackettville/Kinney County; and Uvalde/Uvalde County. Efforts are being made to expand the organizing project to Eagle Pass, Crystal City and Laredo, Texas. Border communities have long been ignored. Our initiative is designed to restore power to this region so that is no longer the case.

Sustained Political Power

TBO trains and mentors local leaders who understand that sustained institutional power enables people to act on their interests, imaginations, and values.

Founding and Early Initiatives

Established in 1987 during a period of economic hardship, the Del Rio Border Organization initially focused on improving the living conditions in the colonias of Del Rio, Texas. Collaborating with local Catholic priests and partnering with industrial area foundation organizations, they successfully secured grants to provide essential water and sewer services to the community. This marked the organization's inception and its dedication to addressing pressing infrastructure needs.

A Force for Positive Change

Over the years, the Del Rio Border Organization has evolved into a potent advocate for the community, tackling a broad spectrum of social and political issues. Despite their nonpartisan stance, they passionately champion their political agenda, which encompasses education, healthcare, a living wage, infrastructure development, and housing. Their strength lies in forming coalitions with local entities and government officials, leading to accomplishments such as improving the regional hospital, supporting local clinics and women's shelters, and advocating for fair wages for essential workers.
